A market-leading energy storage business based in Surrey is currently recruiting a Senior Design Engineer to join its rapidly growing team on a permanent basis. As Senior Design Engineer, you will take on a wide variety of mechanical and structural products, including 3D modelling of assemblies, sub-assemblies and 2D drawings to support next-generation of clean energy solutions.
Senior Design Engineer responsibilities
- Deliver robust design solutions that fulfil the fundamental design requirements.
- Generate design requirements and identify risk areas.
- Develop 3D CAD and engineering drawings for assemblies and components, where required with test rigs and assembly fixtures.
- Review work completed by design engineers.
- Understand and comply with relevant International Standards.
- Be responsible for delivering parts, assemblies, and systems from concept to proof of principle, as part of the design team.
- Develop innovative and novel concepts with high IP value.
- Be a source of engineering knowledge to advise on design, development, material selection, manufacturing, prototyping and test issues.
- Help to create, improve, and take ownership of best engineering practices and processes within the team.
- As an assembly and component owner, drive design activities to achieve the best balance between all physical disciplines whilst liaising with technical experts.
- Ensure designs conform to best practices.
- Demonstrate expertise in design, manufacturing technology, materials, production methods, prototyping and testing.
- Attend design reviews, layouts, HAZOPs, and 3D model reviews of mechanical designs.
Senior Design Engineer requirements
- Degree-level qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Industrial experience in an R&D environment - working on mechanical systems.
- Capable of performing hand calculations to provide initial design direction and confidence in follow up simulation results.
- High level of knowledge of 3D computer aided design (CAD) software packages (preferably with experience in Solidworks).
- Good knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Understanding of physical failure methods and approaches to root cause analysis.
- Good grasp of design verification approaches and ability to define suitable test methods.
- Effective communicator. Able to present appropriate, concise, and accurate information in both written and verbal formats.
- Able to undertake structural FE analysis of components and assemblies.
- Capable of progressing tasks autonomously with a minimum of supervision.
- Comfortable with multi-tasking, leading and prioritising activities. Setting and planning work effectively to ensure project deadlines are met.
- Working with mechanical design engineers to deliver schedules of work.
