Product Manager - Sustainable Packaging

London   •  £50000 - £60000 per annum + + Benefits   •  Permanent, Full time


An innovative start-up in the sustainable packaging space has an exciting opportunity for a Product Manager to join its London-based facility. Your role will be to contribute to the development of the product market strategy, define new product requirements, and drive new product development. We are looking for someone with previous experience in the packaging, paper, FMCG, or food industries, with proven experience in supporting a new product from conception through to launch.

The Role

The role of the Product Manager is to contribute to the development of the product market strategy, define new product requirements, and drive new product development to grow products in-line with business goals and vision. You will be directly responsible for leading the product strategy, planning, launching, and delivery of the volume and profit targets for the products under responsibility including product roadmap management, product positioning, and value proposition, and product lifecycle management.

You will lead, consolidate and coordinate on behalf of their products with marketing, sales, R&D and other related functions and across geographies ensuring that the needs of all are represented and that progress is clearly reported. The role is responsible for building product knowledge in the sales and marketing organizations and directly supporting with key customer interactions. You must consider both short and long-term product objectives and ensure a close linkage to overall company objectives. Strategic as well as tactical, the Product Manager is flexible, persuasive, analytical and collaborative. The Product Manager is motivated by creation of well-grounded product propositions and achievement of targets.

Key Duties:

  • To improve and support innovative technical solutions to improve product quality, cost and speed of delivery
  • To work in line with the standard operating manuals and processes to ensure consistency of approach within the product development team
  • Responsible for creating detailed technical specifications and size charts. To technically develop the products from initial prototype to production completion
  • To support in updating and reviewing the business's technical standards with a view to keeping them up to date with the latest legislation, requirements and technologies.
  • Maintain professional knowledge of plastic and sustainability legislation specifically around certified environmental assessments
  • Project management of current and new products; controlling, maintaining, and housekeeping system data integrity and ensuring customer delivery deadlines are met.
  • Product portfolio development/optimization, incl. new products commercialization
  • Attend meetings with global sales teams and customers and focus on optimizing sales and identifying opportunities for product development with new uses and applications of company materials
  • Develop and keep up-to-date product and capability road maps
  • Lead a cross functional product development team for the development of new products
  • Set product positioning and pricing to balance a competitive product offering with growth & profitability
  • Manage operational product planning, forecasting, monitor launch progress, track and share KPIs and reporting on product(s)
  • Create strategic product plan for all products under responsibility including market analysis, customer, consumer and competitor analysis, product propositions and positioning and managing roadmaps for both long and short term timeframes (Strategic plan and Annual Operating plan)
  • Oversees (with marketing team or others) insight and analysis work to identify and quantify market / segment opportunities and company opportunities within overall markets and globally
  • Build the foundational value proposition for each product (within segments together with sales and marketing teams)
  • Identify longer term product needs and requirements providing inputs to R&D and developing product road maps and portfolio analyses. Develop business cases as required for stages of development and investment

Key Skills and Qualifications Required:

  • BSc+ Education - should have strong design skills and understand how product components and materials work together functionally and aesthetically.
  • Creative skills - creativity is also central to this role, as product managers need to conceptualize new products and improvements, determine the look and feel of a product's design, and come up with new and competitive products and marketing strategies.
  • Problem-solving skills - in this role, product managers frequently need to assess issues with products and develop solutions, so effective problem-solving skills are vital as well as being detail-oriented.
  • Team collaboration - product managers work with manufacturing, supply chain, and sales teams, so they should be able to effectively coordinate activities between teams and personnel
  • Communication skills - effective written and verbal communication is important in this role since product manager needs to provide instructions and reports to team members and supervisors
  • Product Management knowledge and experience - gained in either the packaging, paper, FMCG or food markets.
  • Good leadership skills and ability to manage staff
  • Strong decision-making and problem solving skills
  • Ability to implement improvements & cost saving initiatives
  • Have previous held a managerial position
  • Help inspire a sense of accountability and responsibility in the workforce by demonstrating the benefits of implementing new procedures and workflows, which in turn reduces work related stress
