Site Head of Pharmaceutical Development

A pharmaceutical company focusing on topical therapies is undergoing an exciting expansion which requires a Site Head of Pharmaceutical Development to join the team. This is a brand new role, created to help manage and lead an expanding team of analytical and formulation scientists.You will be responsible for leading and overseeing pharmaceutical development projects from early prototype preparation to commercial launch. To be considered, you must have a significant career history within the pharmaceutical industry - preferably with topical drug formulations - and be an experienced team leader/manager.

The Role

You will be responsible for leading and overseeing pharmaceutical development projects from early prototype preparation to commercial launch, as well as maintaining communication with external partners.

This is a great opportunity for an Pharmaceutical Development scientist who is seeking a new challenge to their career. You will be heading small and expanding team of formulation and analytical scientists working internally with early stage pharmaceutical development projects and supporting the company's development pipeline and commercial products from a pharmaceutical development perspective.


  • Oversee day-to-day drug pharmaceutical development activities mainly within topicals from conception to final marketing
  • Ensure and develop the laboratory staffs skill base within pharmaceutical development
  • Ensure and prioritise that laboratory resources are adequate to meet project goals
  • Inspire and motive Site staff employees
  • Provide research & technical leadership and manage projects in collaboration with external CROs/CMOs and academic groups
  • Provide input to feedback on laboratory budget needs and lab associates' development requirements
  • Plan and prioritize monthly tasks
  • Dissemination of research and development activities in internal and external presentations and reports

Essential requirements:

  • BSc or Master in Chemistry or related scientific discipline (PhD is considered advantageous)
  • Significant years experience in the pharmaceutical industry, preferably with topical drug formulations
  • Department or team management experience is required
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical development regulatory guidelines and ICH guidelines
  • Solid experience in writing and presenting scientific reports and presentations
  • Experience in communication with external partners on pharmaceutical development subjects
  • Candidate must have the right to work in the UK


  • Understanding of matters related to intellectual property
  • Materials science - rheology, particle sizing, characterization of materials
  • Experience in scale-up, ideally in pharmaceutical formulation
  • Pharmacology background
  • Statistics - QbD and DoE
  • Experience with interactions with regulatory authorities

Personal skills:

  • Interested in taking group leadership
  • Must be self-motivated, possess good interpersonal skills, and able to independently handle a wide variety of work assignments and meet tight timelines
  • Candidate will work in a fast-changing environment and needs good judgment and awareness to recognize and solve formulation issues
  • Strong IT skills - Microsoft Office as a minimum
  • Good writing, communication, and time-management skills
  • Team-working and ability to plan and conclude on own working tasks
  • Proactive mentality and ability to work in a small team environment
