Principal Protein Scientist

CK Group are working in partnership with Avacta to recruit a Principal Protein Scientist to be based at their site in West London, on a permanent basis.

About Avacta:
Avacta are a clinical stage oncology drug company.

Their aim is to utilise their innovative therapeutic and diagnostic platforms to treat cancer and other diseases to provide benefit to patients, including those who do not respond to existing therapies. They have their own drug discovery and diagnostics development laboratories, while also collaborating with academic labs and industry. Avacta?s Therapeutics division has recently relocated to Scale Space in London, a new hub of technology and life science organisations.

About the role:
The main purpose of the position scientist is to lead internal and external programmes, direct research and develop strategies. You?ll be able to work with no experimental supervision, delegate activities across the team and independently initiate new work and collaborations. Working closely and effectively with programme leaders, VP Biology, CSO, PMO and other departments you will develop detailed project plans, timelines, set budgets, contribute to TPPs etc.

Supervising and advising colleagues in work and experimental approaches, you will have oversight of multiple programmes and facilitate a successful scientific culture. You will coach and mentor team members and support their personal development for continued improvement and to meet the company?s needs.

Part of your role will include presenting work of the organisation to external partners with extensive knowledge and authority, including conference presentations. You will also author and review reports and contribute to key documents.

You will be able to understand the needs of the organisation and how scientific strategy fits into this. You?ll be able to prioritise programmes with input from our senior leadership team and have an understanding of the drug development process.

Further responsibilities:
? Maintains and applies expertise in molecular biology, protein engineering, protein expression and QC analysis to deliver clinical candidates. You will be able to work independently and communicate effectively across disciplines.
? Responsible for developing and executing strategies and experimental work to deliver complex biologics including antibodies, antibody fragments and related molecules, and fusion proteins. You will also deliver and quality control a range of other proteins to support programme delivery.
? Ideally, you will also maintain expertise in the subject area to support library generation and screening.
? Work will be within multi-disciplinary teams: flexibility to work on multiple programmes and different functional activities and resilience to move between these are key.

About you:
To be considered for the position, you will have the following skills and expertise:
? PhD with extensive experience in a relevant research based environment
? A deep knowledge and strong technical skills in molecular biology with a good understanding of protein structure.
? Experience of engineering protein stability and affinity, along with knowledge of CMC requirements for antibodies or alternative scaffolds.
? Experience of multi-specific antibodies, fusion proteins and other next-generation biologics to support pipeline delivery.
? Experience in protein expression (in bacterial and mammalian cells) and purification using AKTA systems, providing innovative solutions to trouble-shoot and optimise procedures.
? Experience protein characterisation and QC with extensive experience of biophysical characterisation techniques including analytical hplc, thermostability studies, SPR (Biacore) and BLI (Octet).
The following skills would be beneficial for this position, but not essential:
? Experience of ADCs
? Knowledge of in vitro display platforms and library design (generation and screening), including alternative scaffolds
? Knowledge of oncology, immunology or immuno-oncology drug development
