Electrode R&D Scientist

A globally recognised energy storage business based in Guildford is currently recruiting for an Electrode R&D Scientist to join their established materials team on a permanent basis. You will take a primary role in developing and guiding the design of key gas diffusion layer and electrode materials used within fuel cell systems.

This role will suit a BSc/MChem/MSci/PhD level qualified candidate, possessing relevant experience developing materials for electrochemical devices.

Electrode R&D Scientist responsibilities

  • Develop state of the art and next-generation electrode and GDL materials for fuel cells and electrolysers
  • Drive and improve the understanding of performance, durability, and degradation mechanisms within the fuel cell and electrolyser operating environments; particularly, with a view to developing and optimizing current and next-generation gas diffusion layer (GDL)
  • Develop SOPs and processes for the characterisation and analysis of GDLs and electrode materials
  • Participate in improving understanding of GDLs and electrode materials interactions with other unit cell and stack components and configurations for fuel cells and electrolysers.
  • Actively disseminate information cross-functionally with the organisation
  • Develop, including risk and COSHH assessments, safety protocols and procedures related to the safe handling, storage and disposal of materials used within Fuel Cell stacks and systems

Electrode R&D Scientist requirements

  • Degree level qualification in materials science, chemistry, or chemical engineering - ideally focusing on key areas of study including polymers, catalysts and energy storage.
  • Experience developing materials for electrochemical devices
  • Experience with gas diffusion layer materials and their behaviour in electrochemical devices
  • Knowledge of stability and contamination mechanisms in in electrochemical devices
  • An understanding of transport and electrochemical processes within fuel cells and electrolysers
  • Hands on experience of developing and/or guiding the development of GDLs and/or materials within an electrochemical environment
  • Experience managing and participating in multi-disciplinary technology and engineering projects within a commercial environment
