A global leader in the composite materials market is currently seeking an experienced and 'hands-on' Engineer/Materials Scientist to join their team as a Qualification Engineer. As a key member of the engineering group and based within the company's large scale testing laboratory you will focus on performing defined qualification and testing programmes to facilitate/support customer qualification of company materials for use in aerospace and industrial applications
Main duties:
- Review & interpret material specifications qualification test plans and associated test methods and to address/manage inconsistencies or contradictions
- Actively support the preparation of qualification test plans/statements of work
- Generate - with autonomy - detailed test plans and overall project plans
- Undertake all aspects of test specimen preparation and generate defined physical chemical and mechanical test data - implementing and developing new test methods as required - and proposing & implementing agreed improvements to existing procedures & processes
- Investigate - with autonomy - the reasons behind unexpected specimen failures and to propose next steps based on sound technical know-how/input
- Statistically analyse and accurately document test data and material performance conclusions in medium/large technical reports with detailed discussions based on technical reasoning and management consensus
- Undertake project work in compliance with all relevant customer/material specifications quality standards and health safety & environmental (HSE) requirements - for self & others - & to maintain accurate records in support of said compliance
- To undertake and champion ancillary tasks (including 5S LEAN continuous improvement etc.) in support of the day-to-day running of the Qualification department
Major challenges of the job:
- Plan coordinate & manage a variety of on-going qualifications and testing activities to ensure the timely completion of defined projects
- Overcome the day-to-day issues - for self and others - which arise in a busy Qualification Test Laboratory
- Be able to drive with autonomy agreed qualification and testing projects to successful completion
Knowledge skills and experience required:
- A technical background in an engineering or material science discipline (a working knowledge of FRP composite materials testing will be advantageous)
- A hands-on approach to laboratory work combined with good attention to detail
- The ability to analyse test data - draw firm conclusions and where necessary - propose next steps
- The ability to write accurate and concise technical (medium/large) reports with detailed discussions based on technical reasoning.
- Effective project management and communication skills and be able to work independently and as a team member or leader
- To be a key contact within department for testing consultancy and be able to command the personal respect and confidence of colleagues and customers for expert knowledge within function
