R&D Development Chemist

East Sussex   •  Negotiable  •  Permanent, Full time


Cranleigh are working with a market leading chemical manufacturing business who specialise in a variety of car care and cleaning products. They are looking to appoint a skilled R&D Formulation Chemist to join the technical team based at its state-of-the art facility in East Sussex. You will work closely with the R&D team to develop and improve new and existing products.

We are looking for a driven graduate chemist who has previous formulation/development experience, a forward-thinking mentality, coupled with the ability to lead R&D projects and deliver successful results to clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop formulations for existing and new products to be introduced to the market through research, development, and innovation.
  • Conducting research into similar products currently on the market to gain insight.
  • Liaising with the management team to decide the specifications and expected outcomes of products based on market research relating to customer preferences and interest.
  • Designing, organising, and testing of potential formulations within a lab environment.
  • Ensuring formulations in development do not produce unwanted safety classifications.

Additional Duties:

  • Liaising with suppliers of raw materials and specialist chemicals that could be used in new or existing products.
  • Working with the Stock Control and Purchasing Manager to coordinate procurement and ensure satisfactory lead times for sourcing and supply of materials.
  • Providing support with feedback to customer queries concerning chemical considerations, risk, and quality control.
  • Maintaining up to date records on the status of each project at every stage of development.
  • Producing and maintaining project plans and risk assessments for each project.
  • Overseeing safety and cleanliness within the laboratory.
  • Sourcing and maintaining new and existing equipment within the laboratory.

Experience & Skills Required:

  • Degree in chemistry or closely related discipline.
  • Previous formulation/development experience within the chemical sector.
  • Good computer skills & excellent time management.
  • Scientific methodology, project planning and organisational skills.
  • Project Management Skills: Good knowledge and understanding of project management methodologies.
  • Good knowledge of safe working practices - COSHH
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently, to think creatively and to solve problems at all stages of R&D and production projects.
