Cell Line Development Scientist

A fast-growth food start up has an exciting opportunity for a Cell Line Scientist to join its team. Your role will be to support the development of muscle and fat immortalised cell lines to replace animal tissue. You must have extensive experience in cell line development and knowledge of primary cells.

Responsibilities:

The purpose of this role is to conduct scientific work, to support the development of muscle and fat immortalised cell lines to replace animal tissue. As a scientist you will join the Cell Sciences Team to perform the following duties:

  • Design and optimise a high-throughput processes for the generation of animal immortalised cell lines
  • Maintain cell lines in culture for many generations
  • Characterise capacity of proliferation and differentiation of immortal cell lines into muscle and fat
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, qRT-PCR, Western Blot, Flow cytometry and high throughput imaging
  • Design, plan, and execute complex R&D experiments ensuring that deliverables are successfully met within timelines
  • Document research findings clearly in an electronic lab book
  • Communicate regularly in group meetings and prepare and deliver presentations to project team and internal stakeholders
  • Along with team members, provide routine laboratory maintenance, including participating in equipment upkeep, cleaning rotas and laboratory consumables stock management
  • Shared responsibility for out-of-hours cell culture maintenance
  • Ensure that laboratory health, safety and quality procedures are followed
  • Select, follow, and adapt experimental protocols and generate laboratory SOPs
  • Support the preparation of laboratory risk assessments and maintenance of health and safety protocols
  • Maintain the confidentiality of the project and protocols
  • Keep abreast of current technologies and relevant scientific literature to help identify opportunity for improvements and reduction of costs

Qualifications & Experience:

Minimum Required :

  • Master or PhD degree in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, or related field
  • Two or more years' experience in cell biology and process development, preferably gained in industry

Essential Experience:

  • Extensive experience in cell line development and subcloning techniques with deep knowledge of cell biology and cell line immortalisation, preferably from primary cells
  • Experience with automation and high-throughput technologies applied to mammalian cell line generation
  • Proven experience in cell culture, including maintenance of primary and stem cells
  • Skilled in troubleshooting and conducting multi-factorial experiments.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of growing team
  • Excellent numeracy, computer, and communication skills

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience with growing cells in suspension or 3D culture systems
  • Skilled in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, qRT-PCR, Western Blot, Flow cytometry and Imaging
  • Proven experience in statistical experimental design, data analysis and multi-step optimisation.
  • Application of Design of Experiments (DOE) to rationalise experiment design
  • Ability to apply mathematical characterisation to biological processes
  • Experience of writing SOPs and risk assessments
