R&D Process Development Engineer

Cambridgeshire   •  £39000 - £44000 per annum  •  Permanent, Full time


A biopharmaceutical company has an exciting opportunity for a Process Development Engineer to join its R&D hub in Cambridge. This role will focus on the development and transfer of processes, and the creation and documentation of solutions to R&D process challenges, developing those solutions to implement at the pilot production scale in a next-gen cell & gene therapy manufacturing sphere. To be considered, you must have experience in machine & equipment design, risk assessments and be familiar with the scale-up of manufacturing processes.

The Role:

As part of a growing research and development engineering team, this role will centre around the development and transfer of processes:

  • Novel Material Handling Systems
  • Novel Chemical Reaction Systems
  • Heat Systems & Control

Focusing on equipment prototyping, you will be responsible for the creation and documentation of solutions to R&D process challenges, developing those solutions to implement at the pilot production scale in a next-gen cell & gene therapy manufacturing sphere.

You will be working with a highly motivated and friendly group of scientists in an R&D laboratory environment to deliver solutions to the latest industry needs. This role gives the opportunity to have substantial design input to real-world products in the cell & gene therapy field.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Concepting, CAD, FEA for an iterative design ethos.
  • Evaluation of designs against EHS & ergonomic requirements.
  • Prototyping of parts & assemblies suitable for 3D printing, CNC manufacture, and fabrication.
  • Documentation of design & prototyping work for traceable development.
  • Engaging with suppliers, manufacturing partners, internal technical transfer & manufacturing teams.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe working environment and work within current health and safety procedures.
  • Assist in other areas of R&D engineering where experience is suited.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • MEng / BEng + MSc Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in machine & equipment design, P&ID drafting, risk assessment & FMEA.
  • Regulatory knowledge: UKCA, CE, Directives: Machinery, Pressure Equipment.
  • High level of proficiency in an Industry-standard CAD package. Solidworks, CATIA, CREO
  • Experience with prototyping

It would be an advantage if you can demonstrate:

  • A working knowledge of ergonomic design principles
  • A working knowledge of fluid mechanics
  • An understanding of biocompatibility & hygienic design
