Yeast Laboratory Manager

Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 1GF   •  Permanent, Full time

Do you have molecular biology experience with yeast research expertise? Do you have proven laboratory and people management skills?

If so, you could play an integral part in developing the next generation of yeast bioprocess technology for industrial biologics manufacturing.

Phenotypeca is building the ‘go-to’ platform for the development of baker’s yeast strains for industrial-scale manufacture of vaccines, therapeutics, and other recombinant proteins. Our mission is to make these treatments more affordable to all who need them, not just those that live in the wealthiest nations.

As part of our growth and having successfully won new projects we now have a new opportunity to manage Phenotypeca’s yeast strain development laboratory for our grant, IP and commercial projects.

Within this R&D role, you will be involved in optimising strains of baker’s yeast for high-yield recombinant protein production and technology transfer for cGMP manufacturing. Expression construct design, genome engineering and breeding will be used to support high-throughput screening and selection from diverse genetic libraries during upstream process development.

As well as effectively managing the yeast laboratory operations, you will also be responsible for supervising research scientists within your team.

The role will report to Phenotypeca’s Research Director and be based at our BioCity Nottingham site with close cooperation with our University operations. On some occasions, UK and international travel will be required to attend conferences and customer/partner visits.

About you:

  • A degree in a life-science subject plus relevant post-graduate qualifications and/or a strong track record in the biotechnology industry.
  • At least 5 years’ yeast research experience with evidence of working collaboratively with established experts in the field, preferably with Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
  • Extensive molecular biology, genetics, and genomics experience.
  • An appreciation of bioprocess development and cGMP manufacturing, with an ability to apply HTP screening technologies for rapid strain selection.
  • Laboratory management experience, including writing lab SOPs, COSHH risk assessment and ensuring safe working practices.
  • Project and people supervisory or management experience.

Benefits:

In return, we offer a competitive salary based on your experience, skills, and qualifications; 24 days holiday plus bank holidays (England); additional benefits could include performance bonus and possible share options after 12 months.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to work with a highly experienced and well-respected team with over 200 years of collective experience in advanced genomics, molecular biology, protein chemistry and fermentation of yeast in biopharmaceutical products such as vaccines, diagnostics and other recombinant proteins.

About us:

Phenotypeca is a rapidly growing yeast research and commercially focussed Biofoundry business, currently working on bioprocess development for vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutic protein production.

We have the world’s most extensive collection of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains for industrial recombinant protein production, comprising up to a billion genetically distinct strains. Phenotypeca optimises biologics production strains to make treatments more affordable and available at the right quality to those who need them.

We are a focused, yet fun company driven by performance, embracing strong business ethics and scientific excellence. Above all, we want our people to be happy and healthy.
