Materials Chemistry Research Associate

Oxfordshire   •  £25000 - £30000 per annum + + Benefits  •  Permanent, Full time


Training will be provided for all aspects but hands on experience in chemical synthesis is expected and knowledge / experience in polymers is desirable. A successful candidate will have a chemistry degree or related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Synthesise biomaterials for production, novel biomaterials for testing and evaluation
  • Characterise chemical and material properties
  • Assist team members with biological assays
  • Scale reactions from lab to pilot scale (g to kg)
  • Assist in the generation of SOPs, COSHH and risk assessments.
  • Participate in R&D meetings, sharing skills and expertise with team members
  • Maintain equipment and order reagents and solvents
  • Ensure accurate recording of experiments using electronic laboratory notebook

Experience Required

  • Formulating and processing natural polymers (polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, hydrogels, and or/protein / enzyme solutions
  • Chemical / mechanical characterization of materials (GPC, SEC - HPLC, NMR, FTIR, TGA, DSC, tensile testing
  • Laboratory experience: previously conducted research project with chemical synthesis and characterization with an understanding of chemical hazards and safety protocols
  • Good knowledge of standard chemical methods in purification, isolation and work up of small molecules (solvents, monomers etc.)
  • Practical experience in polymer synthesis (RAFT, ATRP, ring opening or anionic), processes (bulk, emulsion, solution), post polymerisation modification or hydrogel processing methodologies
  • Experience working with biomaterials or academic understanding of cell materials interfaces
  • Prior experience working in a clean room, biological safety cabinet or aseptic handling or sterilization methods
  • Basic understanding of patents and IP
  • Experience with factorial design of experiments
