R&D Director - Stem Cell Biology

A fast growth biotech start-up has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Biology R&D to join its team. Leading the R&D team, your role will focus on the development of tissue engineering solutions and the implementation of cost reduction initiatives for cell culture. You must have demonstrated technical experience in the field of stem cell biology, or a closely related subject.


As the Director of Biology you will be leading the Biology team. Your responsibilities include the development of tissue engineering solutions for the production of skeletal muscle and adipocytes from stem cells plus the implementation of cost reduction initiatives related to cell culture.

  • Delivery of the skeletal muscle and adipogenesis programmes within R&D
  • Delivery cost reduction through media development and optimisation
  • Scientifically lead complex multi-factorial experiments to enhance the production of cells for cultivated meat
  • Oversee the team deliverables resulting of the highest quality, within budget and timelines
  • Lead, motivate and inspire the R&D team
  • Engage with other teams and with external collaborators
  • Identify opportunities to collaborate with third parties, e.g. through joint grant applications
  • Build strong, lasting relationships with our expert Scientific Advisory Board
  • Prepare and deliver technical report updates to senior management
  • Keep up to date with field developments
  • Responsible for identifying and initiating new avenues of research, including methods to reduce production cost
  • Contribute to identifying and solve production scale up bottlenecks for the production of muscle and fat at laboratory scale


  • A PhD in a relevant area of Biological Sciences or related field
  • ≥ 10 years of post-doctoral or industry experience in relevant area


  • In-depth experience in principles and practices of stem cell biology methodologies
  • Expertise in developing and optimising differentiation protocols from stem cells with preference for cultivated meat relevant cell types such as skeletal muscle cells and adipocytes
  • In-depth experience in 3D tissue engineering to produce living tissues, which mimic the morphology and function of what naturally occurs in vivo
  • Good understanding of poly-omics approaches to enhance stem cell differentiation
  • Evidence in developing solutions for cost reduction in cell culture
  • Experience in leading, developing and motivating successful teams
  • Ability to manage complex projects under pressure
  • Experience in leading partnership interactions
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively; in a fast-paced team environment with shifting priorities
  • A proven history of independent investigations and innovative thinking
  • Strong leadership skills demonstrating vision and strategy
