Paramount Recruitment is working with a leading player in the drug discovery field who is looking for a key member of their Medicinal Chemistry leadership team in South France. This role will join a global Medicinal Chemistry department of around 400 people and will continue to grow in line with their 5-year plan. The team has already extended their sites across Europe, and have high-class equipment to deliver more compounds and innovative solutions.

We are looking for an experienced Manager/Director with a breadth of experience in Medicinal and Discovery Chemistry who would be excited to take a new team from 4 experienced Chemists up to 12 in the next 12-18 months. This role will join one of the most established Medicinal Chemistry departments in the business with excellent leadership. It would be ideal to find someone who would like to grow and develop themselves in the future.

This company has been established for almost 30 years and has built substantial drug discovery expertise and an industrialised platform that can drive new innovative drugs into the clinic. They have key therapeutic expertise in neuroscience, immunology, metabolic diseases, oncology and infectious diseases.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Effectively lead project teams, often in a cross-matrix environment, to achieve project goals consistently within set timelines and budget
Drive the overall scientific and strategic direction of projects, and take responsibility for the successful execution of project plans
Provide direct line management for the chemistry project teams, including performance management, career development and maintaining overall team and individual productivity
Build and maintain professional working relationships with clients to agree and influence scientific direction and project plans and ensure successful outcomes for both parties
Effective diplomatic communication of issues, changes of plan and progress both externally (client) and internally (within teams and to senior management)
Regular reporting of scientific process as required by clients, including organising and presenting at client meetings both face to face and remotely
Support the business in activities such as R&D, proposal writing, business development activities and recruitment
Adapt scientific knowledge to resolve research problems encountered in achieving defined goals with assistance from line managers or other team leaders to meet internal and project deadlines
Gather and diffuse pertinent news from the scientific literature in medicinal and organic chemistry
Write and contribute to publications and patents where possible

Experience and attributes:

PhD or Master's degree in organic chemistry or another relevant discipline with extensive experience working in medicinal chemistry
Experience in using and interpreting data from modern computational chemistry
Previous managerial experience is required, with a demonstrable ability to interact and collaborate with colleagues and external stakeholders, including those from other disciplines
Clear evidence of successful and creative efforts contributing critically to the progression and success of research projects
In-depth understanding of the drug discovery process and working knowledge of all essential drug discovery scientific disciplines (pharmacology, DMPK, formulation, safety etc) with ability to formulate this knowledge into coherent drug hunting solutions
An excellent communicator with the ability to develop meaningful relationships internally and externally
