Paramount is working closely with a client who is now moving towards a future of enabling faster, deeper genomic research, bringing genomic healthcare to all who need it.
They are looking for a lead data scientist or data analyst in diversity to join their amazing team in London.
The client is leveraging products, services and technology to translate science into the real world to create better outcomes for their patients participants, researchers and communities. They are agile, fast-moving, and innovative, and they are evolving a team that reflects the rich diversity of the communities they serve. The client is launching a range of new projects from April 2021. Their vision and commitment is that EVERYONE should benefit from genomic healthcare and all the promise it brings of personalised, predictive and preventative insights. And… everyone means everyone. There is a fundamental ethical point about equity of access to the best health insights, and today that equity is challenged by the fact that many personalised medicine findings only apply to European ancestry groups because those are the genomic datasets that have been used for research. Examples include the ability to identify rare, diagnostic variants in non-Europeans and applicability of PRS scores and pharmacogenomic findings. Their goal is to make the National Genomic Research Library as diverse as the UK population, or more so where they need to over-index to get to powered cohorts.
*Contribute to shaping a pragmatic and ambitious programme to deliver impact within 12 months (and interim progress within 6 months to feed into future bidding processes), working with the teams internally, along with a wide range of external stakeholders, such as external users - clinical scientist, clinicians, academic and non-academic researchers.
*Lead the analysis arm of the diversity programme, ensuring high relevance and excellent standards of genomic analysis and tools.
*Develop, prototype, and validate new features for genome analysis enabling better diagnostics, clinical management and research in underrepresented populations in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
*Lead a small team (likely 2-3 genomics data scientists) to deliver on genomics data analysis for diversity programme and analytical tool development
*Communicate with internal and external stakeholders, in particular research and clinical community, to ensure the relevance to planned analysis, tools and results
*Support and organise project workshops and meetings, including organising and producing agenda, presentations, actions.
*Disseminate the programme results to clinical and research communities, e.g. via presentations in conferences, publications, etc.
*Know, understand and communicate the pragmatic meaning of our virtues of Empathy, Integrity, Focus, Connection, Speed, Curiosity, and Impact; embody them in all aspects of your role
*PhD and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience, or equivalent experience in at least one of the following: Genetics/Genomic with a strong computational component, Statistical genetics, Genetic epidemiology, Bioinformatics with the focus on human genomics
*Experience in human population genetics or genetic epidemiology, ideally with the focus on diverse populations (e.g. ancestry inference, genetic mapping in stratified populations, polygenic risk scores in diverse populations, etc)
*Deep and demonstrable commitment to diversity in general, along with a solid understanding of the issues presented by a lack of diversity in the genomic and health data space
*Experience in successfully leading genomic research project from the inception to deliverables, demonstrated e.g. by a good publication record
*Deep understanding and hands-on experience of a broad range of bioinformatic techniques and approaches
*Excellent knowledge of NGS analysis methods and pipelines
*Strong knowledge of statistics and/or machine learning
*Strong programming skills (Python, R)
*Experience in handling large data sets
*Experience of data management for operational and scientific problem-solving skills
*Ability to inspire and motivate other members of the team, deliver to deadlines, and focus on delivery-oriented data-driven strategical decisions
*Demonstratable 'intellectual courage' which enables collaboration with experts in fields other than your own and developing innovative ways of data analysis
*Excellent analytical and reporting skills. Self-motivated, with excellent ability to work on own initiative
*Distinctive written and verbal communication, in particular listening and influencing skills and pragmatic deployment of empathy and diplomacy
*An approach to working life that means you thrive and get energy from complex and ambiguous situations, where many stakeholders will have strong and often contradictory views on the best way forward
