Phenotypeca is looking for a Full-Time Senior Research Scientist with extensive experience in protein purification and characterisation/bioanalysis to join their growing team developing vaccine, diagnostics and therapeutic protein production processes.
The Role: As the perfect candidate, you will be strongly motivated to play an integral part in developing the next generation of yeast bioprocess technology for industrial biologics manufacturing. You’ll have a thirst to discover new things about this safe and reliable eukaryote, using cutting-edge techniques and working collaboratively with established experts in the field. With great development prospects, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for meeting corporate goals to optimise R&D scale biologics processes for our customers and partners. You will be actively involved in the development and delivery of Phenotypeca’s research strategy.
You will lead R&D scale downstream process development projects and actively support product characterisation/bioanalysis to inform upstream process development and optimal strain selection. As an ideal candidate, you will have outstanding protein purification and characterisation skills needed to develop R&D processes ready for scale-up to clinical and cGMP manufacturing. The role will include liaison with project partners, service providers and stakeholders, as well as the development and exemplification of the company’s patent approach.
An important element of the role is ensuring a safe working environment is maintained at all times through the implementation of Phenotypeca and University of Nottingham procedures and guidelines as well as the preparation and maintenance of EH&S documentation and SOPs.
The ideal candidates will have:
- A life-science PhD with 5+ years relevant postdoctoral experience, or equivalent.
- Extensive experience in protein purification and protein chemistry, especially where relevant to cGMP biologics manufacturing.
- Excellent team-working skills and ability to manage external stakeholders and/or subcontractors.
- Industrial experience in customer-centric projects and research commercialisation would be an advantage.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Excellent oral and written communication are essential.
- Effective time-management skills and the ability to work to deadlines.
- Ideally, you will also have experience in laboratory workflow automation and handling large data sets, such as in a machine learning project.
Applicants with some of these skills, e.g. with experience in protein purification or protein chemistry/characterisation, are also invited to apply.
In return, we offer a competitive salary based on experience, skills and qualifications. 24 days holiday plus bank holidays (England). Additional benefits include a pension and a potential employee share option.
This role will be based in the University of Nottingham’s Synthetic Biology Research Centre and/or BioCity Nottingham.
Normal Working Hours: 7.5hrs per day between 8 am and 6 pm Monday to Friday*.
*Flexible Working and COVID Restrictions: Flexible working between 6:30-22:00 may be available to meet individual requirements. Restricted lab access due to COVID may also require a degree of flexibility around your working hours, which may include early or late shifts between 6:30-22:00.
The Company: Phenotypeca is a rapidly growing yeast research and commercially focussed Biofoundry business, currently working on bioprocess development for vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutic protein production.
We have the world’s most extensive collection of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains for industrial recombinant protein production, comprising up to a billion genetically distinct strains. Phenotypeca optimises biologics production strains to make treatments more affordable and available at the right quality to those who need them.
We are a focussed yet fun company driven by performance, has strong business ethics and embraces scientific excellence. Above all, we put our customers first and want our people to be happy and healthy.
