Scientific Software Lead

This is a great opportunity for a Senior Software Developer with a well-established research institute in London who are world leaders in identifying cancer genes and discovering cancer drugs. This role will sit within the Scientific Computing team which provides a number of key services to researchers across the institution including; High Performance Computing (HPC), Research Data Storage (RDS), Research Data Management (RDM) and Scientific Software.
This role does allow remote working in the UK but travel to their London sites a few times a month is required.

This role will be providing support for third party research software and development of new scientific applications and pipelines. This role will simultaneously allow users to focus more on science and less on software wrangling while also supporting and training those users who do wish to develop software for themselves and others. You will develop coding standards and best practice and reduce duplication and this will be achieved with the application of professional software development methods. You will also line manage 2 software developers in the team with the potential to grow it in the future.

*To support the best use of scientific software
*To facilitate software development for research teams- develop relationships with stakeholders and promote the service
*To oversee delivery of scientific computing software projects
*To promote good software development practices and standards across the business
*To provide specialist knowledge to support users of current services
*To contribute to leadership and strategy of the scientific computing team

Qualifications and Skills/Experience:
*Degree in computer science, physics, mathematics, biology or a closely related field
*Ability to lead Scientific Software team and to represent team
*Ability to rapidly acquire fluent knowledge of new programming languages
*Significant experience of using, developing and supporting scientific applications in one or more of the following areas: image processing, scientific visualisation, bioinformatics, genomics, mathematics, statistics
*Proficiency in software development under Linux or Mac
*Experience of using Phyton and four or more of the following: C/C++, Java, Perl, R, MATLAB, Fortran, Bash, SQL, PHP
*Experience of managing version control systems such as "git
*Experience of delivering well documented software projects
*Experience with delivering software under a formalised project environment
*Experience of leading a small team of software developers carrying out project work and managing resources
