Senior Scientist - Immunology

This is a 6 month fixed term role

Based at Alderley Park, the Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC) collaborates with academia and industry to develop new approaches for discovering the medicines of the future. It is one of eleven Catapult centres, established by Innovate UK to encourage innovation and growth in the UK’s high-potential industrial sectors. The aim of the Catapults is to bring expertise, innovation and investment together to improve the pathway towards national and international commercial success for new discoveries and businesses.

Role Purpose:

The role of Senior Scientist - Immunology, in the MDC Discovery group, would suit a highly motivated self-starter who is passionate about the application of a variety of immunology and molecular techniques to medicines discovery. Working in an interdisciplinary team, the successful candidate will apply their expertise in immunology and associated methods to deliver impactful results to a collaborative project with an external partner. Through the application of flow cytometry, Luminex, microscopy and other advanced methods, the candidate will characterise immune response in complex cell systems and prosecute cellular target engagement and target validation studies. Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Apply immunology expertise to support the delivery of a collaborative project focussed on mechanistic understanding of an advanced lead molecule
  • Design and deliver strategies to evaluate phenotypic responses of multiple cell populations in tissue and blood samples including the assessment of compound efficacy
  • Deliver high quality data in a complex and time pressured research team environment
  • Contribute scientific insight and innovative technical approaches for more successful drug discovery programmes
  • Demonstrate effective communication and research collaboration skills
  • Maintain excellent written records of work

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Demonstrate evidence of practical expertise in flow cytometry for biological applications, including multi-colour compensation and building and optimising antibody panels for multiple cell type analysis
  • Experienced in cell biology, and complex cell models, ideally including the isolation of cell types from whole blood and the analysis of phenotypic responses
  • Experience in primary T cell, B cell or monocyte/macrophage assays would be an advantage
  • Experienced in the application of flow cytometry to the study of cellular responses
  • Experience in in vitro biology analysis techniques such as ELISA, Luminex, western blotting and PCR would be an advantage
  • Experienced in molecular biology techniques such as RNA isolation and RT-qPCR analysis
  • Experience in microscopy techniques and analysis would be an advantage
  • Experience of working in collaborative project teams, with both internal and external colleagues; experience of working in a medicine discovery setting, with academic groups and with SMEs would be an advantage
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a highly collaborative and inter-disciplinary environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both experts and non-experts in the field
