Commercial Laboratory Manager

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the CEO to develop and execute a roadmap for success
  • Ensure the smooth running of the laboratory
  • Managing budgets
  • Identifying and evaluating capital equipment and negotiating with suppliers
  • Implementing automation into the laboratory
  • Implementing KAIZEN philosophy in the laboratory
  • Identifying and hiring new staff when necessary
  • Mentor, supervise and train laboratory staff
  • Write Standard Operating Procedures
  • Compare the performance of diagnostic test kits available on the market and identify the best ones to use for in house screening procedures
  • Troubleshoot existing methods
  • Work with the laboratory team when demand is high and providing cover during holidays
  • ‘Manage by walking’ to identify process improvement opportunities, adherence to Health & Safety rules and ensure a high standard of the general lab environment
  • Keep abreast of scientific research and developments in the sector
  • Work with Supply Chain Manager to ensure effective rotation of stock and reduce overstocking
  • Carry out general administrative duties

Skills & Qualification:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Science i.e. immunology
  • Technical experience of protein expression, assay development, antibody production
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working in a supervisory position in a commercial laboratory setting
  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to develop relationships with colleagues
  • Effective communicator
  • Proven project management skills
  • Ability to create Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and maintain accurate laboratory records
  • Strong continuous improvement mindset
  • Excellent computer skills e.g. Microsoft Office
