Director of Computational Biology

A global pharmaceutical company headquartered in Europe is looking to grow their translational science function in the UK, and is currently seeking an established Bioinformatics Leader to spearhead computational innovations in drug discovery and lead a growing, multidisciplinary team of talented Computer Scientists.

The Director of Bioinformatics will be involved with developing departmental strategy focussing on target identification, biomarkers, target validation and qualification of drug targets, focussing predominantly on cardio-metabolic diseases. Main areas of interest include AI & machine learning, statistical genetics, systems biology and bioinformatics.

Responsibilities may include:
*Taking responsibility for the Computational Biology and AI/Machine Learning functions of the Translational Research department, including defining strategic direction and setting targets and priorities
*Day-to-day management of a growing team of multi-disciplinary Computer Scientists, including Bioinformaticians, Data Scientists, Systems Biologists and Statistician Geneticists
*Identifying, developing and overseeing beneficial collaborations within academia and industry to drive future research projects
*Catalyse innovation throughout the company and ensure the department has state of the art technical and methodological expertise in Computational Biology
The ideal candidate will have:
*A PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Systems Biology or a relevant discipline
*Post-Doctoral experience and a strong publication record is desirable
*A background working in some form of cardio-metabolic research would be highly advantageous
*Solid leadership experience either from holding a managerial position in pharma/biotech or from being the Leader of a research group in academia
*A real passion for innovation, creativity and an openness to ideas in the drug discovery space as well as having the experience and knowledge necessary to deliver strong scientific results
*Understanding/Experience of AI or Machine Learning in the drug discovery space is desirable
*Excellent communication skills and previous experience working with external and internal stakeholders from a variety of scientific fields/backgrounds
