Scientific Lab Technician - Virology / Molecular Biology

Oxford, Oxfordshire OX3 7FZ   •  £28,000 to £32,000  •  Permanent, Full time

Theolytics is a biotech company working to develop curative cancer therapies. We are a University of Oxford spin-out, backed by Oxford Sciences Innovation (OSI). Over the next 18 months, the team will be rapidly expanding as we develop our R&D activities into the clinic.

We are seeking a highly organised, proactive and flexible individual to join our team and be an integral part of the company as we grow. We are looking for someone that is a self-starter, happy to jump in when required in what will be a dynamic working environment.


Supporting a team of scientists by execution of experiments, collating, analysing and presenting data from a variety of sources;

  • Responsible for maintenance of cancer cell cultures;
  • Production and purification of adenoviruses and ensuring batch quality control;
  • Performance of assays for virus characterisation (e.g. QPCR, cell viability assays);
  • Establishment and maintenance of quality sample archiving systems;
  • Recording data to include careful tracking of experimental methods and results using online lab notebooks;
  • Experimental planning and taking ownership of tasks;
  • Development of SOPs;
  • Lab organisation and day-to-day maintenance of the laboratory.

Candidate Profile

Required skills and experience include:

  • A BSc and/or MSc degree in a relevant discipline (such as Virology, Cancer Biology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Biomedical Science);
  • At least 2 years of experience as a research assistant/laboratory technician/scientist in a company and/or academic lab;
  • Recent experience in at least two of the following:
  • Cancer cell line culture (maintenance, counting, seeding cells)
  • Virology techniques (such as virus purification, plaque assays and TCID50)
  • DNA extraction, bacterial cell culture, PCR, gel electrophoresis, QPCR
  • Primary cell culture (e.g. processing tumour biopsies),
  • Cell viability assays, ELISA, flow cytometry;
  • Strong IT skills (including proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint), and comfort using shared drives and online lab books.

Advantageous skills, experience and attributes include:

  • Pharmaceutical and/or biotech industry experience;
  • Excellent time management and record keeping;
  • Experience working with oncolytic viruses and adenoviruses;
  • Experience following SOPs, and using assays;
  • High motivation for, and commitment to, research on anticancer therapies and drug discovery;
  • Dynamic and flexible approach to changing workloads;
  • Detail oriented and meticulous, with a dedication to performing high-quality science;
  • A willingness and propensity to take on responsibility.

Salary: £28,000 to £32,000
